Provides the following basic services to the people of Lancaster County:
Register of Wills
- Grants letters testamentary to those probating a will and letters of administration to those who die without a will. (Records are open to public inspection.)
- Collects inheritance tax for Pennsylvania
- Issues marriage licenses
- Provides applications to persons wishing to obtain copies of birth certificates
- Handles all adoption proceedings. Adoptions are sealed and held in closed court
- Settle estates of minors and incapacitated persons
Providing organization
County of Lancaster
The County acts as an agent of the Commonwealth for those functions which are specified by State law. To carry out those functions, three County Commissioners are elected every four years. The Commissioners serve as the managers and administrators of County government, name citizens to boards, commissions and authorities and award contracts.
