Community CARES - Community CARES Family Shelter (FS)

Provides a safe and warm emergency shelter that houses up to 12 families. The shelter is a temporary home until the parents can get back on their feet. CARES provides case management, life skills classes, employment search support, parenting classes, and children’s activities. Our team also provides linkage to independent housing, benefits acquisition, and healthcare services for up to 90 days. Family shelter is located in Shippensburg, PA, Cumberland County.

For Shelter: Screening on-site from Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm - Call 717-249-1009 ext 2231 Evenings and weekends call 717-249-1009 ext 2242.

Eligibility

Must have minor children. Criminal sexual offenders who appear on the Megan's Law list are not admitted to the CARES program.

OUR MISSION: Serving and strengthening the community by providing emergency shelter, resources, and supportive services to individuals and families at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Located in Cumberland County, it provides: 1. Men & Women's Shelter in Carlisle (7:00am-8:30pm; use day center at 50 W Penn Street Carlisle overnight shelter, 9:00pm-7:00am) 2. Family Shelter with private rooms located at 206 E Burd Street. 3. Winter Overflow Shelter, Dec 1 - Mar 31 located at 201 W Louther Street Carlisle, 8:30pm - 7:00am 4. Street Outreach connecting with unsheltered in Cumberland County 5. Day Center for unsheltered (For showers, laundry, supplies, snacks, etc.) Open for unsheltered any day of week 9:00am-12:00pm and 3:00pm-5:00pm 6. Coordinated Entry Site for Cumberland County, Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm and Saturday, 8:00am-11:00am 7. Homeless Prevention Funds are used to divert and quickly move from homelessness. Funding for rental arrears, deposit, first month's rent, transportation to divert homelessness, and housing search applications. (all funding dependent).
