Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berks County - Students & Mentors Achieving Results Together (SMART)
A school-based mentoring program. It is highly supervised by the professional staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters on-site at participating schools. The target population is elementary and middle school children, adaptable to meet the requirements of a particular school district.
The program works in conjunction with school district officials to improve a child’s academic performance, self-confidence, respect for others & their cultures, and relationships with peers & adults. Mentors can be high school students, college students, or community members (depending on the site).

Application process
Students or parents/guardians in eligible schools can contact their guidance office for more information. The enrollment process – including a written application – will begin from there. All participants undergo an orientation/training prior to acceptance.

Eligibility
Youth (Little Brothers/Sisters)- * elementary or middle school-aged children * willing to complete the application process in its entirety * have a desire to be matched with a Big Brother/Sister and willing to sustain that mentoring match relationship for at least one school year * capable of deriving some benefit from the services of BBBS SMART program Volunteers (Big Brothers/Sisters) * must be a high school student at participating school district, except for the SMART program at Reading School District where volunteers must be at least 19-years-of age; all volunteers must be residents of Berks County * willing to complete the BBBS application and training process * willing to sustain that mentoring match relationship for at least one school year * willing to cooperate with the agency in the supervision/monitoring process of a mentoring match relationship
