A national program of contributory social insurance. Employees, employers and the self-employed pay contributions that are pooled in special trust funds. These funds provide income to workers and dependents in the event of retirement, disability or death. SSA also administers the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program for the aged, blind and disabled.
