Genetic testing is done to detect possible genetic defects that place family members at a far higher risk for developing either breast or ovarian cancer, or both. Both men and women can have this defect and can pass it on down to their children. As part of the process, there is a discussion on all the options available to the patient if she decides to have the test and it comes back positive. Blood is drawn and results are typically back in four to six weeks.

Erie VAMC has 1,836 enrolled female Veterans. Women’s Health services offered are Primary Care, Maternity Care, lactation support, PAP and HPV testing to screen for cervical cancer, community care consult for mammogram screening, mental health care and counseling, menopause treatment, reproductive health services including contraceptive care and infertility evaluation and lifestyle wellness series. A Gynecology Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner is available to provide specialty gynecologic care. Pelvic Ultrasound and Pelvic Floor PT are available at the Erie VA Medical Center. The Women’s Health Program includes a Program Support Assistant, Reproductive Health Navigator, Women’s Health Navigator, and a Women Veterans Program Manager. Lactation Services are available by an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant. Women’s Health Primary Care Providers are available at the Erie VA and 5 CBOCS.

Gynecological services and limited obstetric services are provided in the out-patient physician office by appointment. TAH does NOT have a dedicated obstetric department to deliver babies. Babies are only delivered in emergent situations in the Emergency department.

Skilled advanced practice registered nurses at the Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center can examine health histories of clients and their families, their lifestyle habits and discuss risk factors with them. This assessment can help them understand and perhaps adjust their lifestyles, taking risk factors into account.

Family Planning Plus provides complete gynecological examinations (pap tests, pelvic exams, and clinical breast exams), STD testing, and care for minor GYN problems like vaginal infections for women of all ages and incomes. All services are confidential.

A physician or nurse practitioner will conduct the medical examination. They will check for any problems, including signs of STDs. If you are a woman, they will also do a Pap Smear to test for abnormal cells that can lead to cancer.

Vida Nueva Clinic offers free ob-gyn services to women. Uninsured individuals receive up to six months of services for free.
