Local attorneys volunteer to provide free legal representation for civil cases. A broad spectrum of civil cases are handled, including the following: landlord-tenant, debtor-creditor problems, unemployment compensation, termination of social security or SSI benefits, uninsured tort defense, family law and other serious civil matters. Simple wills, powers of attorney, and health care directives are provided for financially eligible adults age 60 and over. Assistance in clearing criminal records through the state pardon process is also provided.

Also help clients build budgets and credit, and can connect people to affordable home repair.

    Addresses unfair rental practices. A tenant may file a complaint with the Philadelphia Fair Housing Commission if rent is current and the tenant is being threatened with illegal eviction, if a landlord is raising rent while housing code violations exist, if another term of a lease is being violated, or if a landlord is retaliating against a tenant for reporting housing code violations to the Department of Licenses and Inspections.

Union-Snyder Community Action and Susquehanna Valley Mediation are working together to connect renters and landlords to rental assistance, legal information, and professional mediation services with trained, impartial mediators, in the vent of a landlord-tenant conflict. Landlords and tenants must agree to try mediation.
